Special Needs Programs

The South Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs participates in TryCAN, a collaboration of communities that provide an array of recreational opportunities for youth with special needs. There are no residency restrictions or non-resident fees, so youth from all participating communities are welcome in TryCAN programs!

TryCAN was established by a group of parents and its mission is to help provide community-based programs and other events for youth with special needs to foster life skills, socialization and community inclusion of such youth as well as increase general public awareness of and sensitivity to youth with unique needs. TryCAN carries out this mission by helping community partners establish and operate recreation programs and other events. TryCAN also helps train and arrange for volunteer teen peer mentors to work with youth with special needs in special needs and other appropriate programs or events.
