There is now a single combined application for the Senior Freeze (Property Tax Reimbursement), ANCHOR, and Stay NJ programs for residents 65 and over, or those collecting Social Security Disability Benefits. The Treasury will determine eligibility and send a letter with the specific benefits applicants qualify for. The filing deadline is October 31.

The South Orange Public Library is facilitating appointments and space for AARP Tax Aide Help for 2024. The service is opened to anyone in need, beyond South Orange.
To get a tax appointment call the South Orange Public Library at 973-762-0230.  
Prior to the appointment, an Intake/ Interview Form has to be completed by each taxpayer. The library offers the form in person at the 298 Walton Avenue location, or can email it to anyone interested.
Tax-Aide will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 4 to April 10, with appointments at 9:15am; 10am; 10:45am and 11:45am at the Baird Community Center, at 5 Mead Street, Craft room B in the first floor.
If help is needed for more than just 2024 tax preparation, two appointments should be requested.
If filing jointly, both spouses  should be present at appointment.
    Documents required to bring:
Unexpired Drivers License/photo ID card for each taxpayer
Social Security cards for anyone listed on the return (including spouse and dependents)
All tax documents
Medical and other deductible expenses (summary)
IRS Letters 6475 and 6419 if received in January 2024
Previous year tax return, if filed
Intake Form should be completed prior to the time of the appointment (pickup at the library or email)
Email or phone reminders from Tax Aide will be used to minimize "no shows".
Please be advised that tax aide will not help when income from property rentals, income from Uber/Lyft businesses, and returns for sole proprietor businesses with depreciation, inventory, business use of home, net losses.etc., are involved.

This program allows residents to file their taxes directly with the government online, so there are never any filing fees. Residents could save hundreds of dollars each tax season.
