In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Village Offices will be closed on Monday, January 17

MLK Luminary Project

The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race will host its 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 4:00 pm live on YouTube. The theme of this year’s observance is “Serving Something Greater Than Ourselves,” and is based on Dr. King’s call “to discover some cause and some purpose, some loyalty outside of yourself and give yourself to that something.” This interfaith observance will include performances, stories, and ways to connect to volunteer opportunities. The observance will be followed immediately by the lighting of luminaries throughout SOMA. Email MLKLuminaryproject@gmail.com or stop by select local businesses to pick up your luminaries--fill out the MLK Luminary Project Order Form to order and pay in advance of pick up.

Indoor Mask Mandate

On December 21, Village President Collum issued an immediate indoor mask mandate which states "Tonight I signed an Executive Order requiring “an indoor mask mandate for all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in all public facilities and businesses in the Township of South Orange Village” which goes into effect immediately".

SOPL Temporary Closing & Services

Due to the surge of COVID cases and to help stop the spread, as of January 8, 2022 the South Orange Public Library will be limiting services to virtual and pick up. During this time materials may be borrowed, click here for more details on the Park ‘n’ Pick Up services and digital materials. Reference and programming will continue virtually, see the SOPL calendar for the complete schedule. Printing services are also available for pick up, click here.
The Library anticipates reopening on January 24 with a broader range of services, based on COVID cases at that time.
