Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
19th Annual Observance & Volunteer Fair

The 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance is on Monday, Jan 20 at 2 pm, at Columbia High School and is free and open to all. This year’s theme is The Power of One and the program will feature youth voices who will reflect—through spoken word, dance, poetry and music—on the power of individuals to transform our community and our world by counteracting bigotry, hate, and violence in the face of white nationalism. We will end the observance with a symbolic lighting of luminaries as a demonstration of peace and solidarity with Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community. Click here for more information about participating in the luminary project.

Deer Management Program

Essex County has released the plans for the 2020 Essex County Deer Management Program in South Mountain and Hilltop reservations. This is the 13th year of the program, which is geared toward revitalizing the forest ecology by reducing the number of deer.
The program will be held in South Mountain Reservation on Tuesdays, Jan 14, 21 and 28, and Feb 4, 11 and 18, with makeup days on Feb 27 and March 5, if any previous dates are canceled. To maximize safety, South Mountain Reservation, Hilltop Reservation and all parking areas and walking paths inside the two reservations will be closed to the public on the days the program is held in that specific reservation.
The program will not be held in Eagle Rock Reservation.
