2023 Municipal Election 

The Municipal Election shall take place on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 and polls will be open from 6:00 AM through 8:00 PM.  Offices subject to election are Village President &  three (3) seats on the Village’s Board of Trustees. On the South Orange Village website, you will find Voter Registration Forms and Application for Vote by Mail Ballot.  The last day to register to vote in this year’s municipal election is Tuesday, April 18, 2023 and the last day to apply for a Vote by Mail Ballot for this year’s municipal election is Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The May 9, 2023 Municipal Election will be an in person election and if you are unsure of you voting district, please contact the Clerk’s office. For voters who have requested and received their Vote by Mail Ballots, the Safe and Secured Essex County Election Ballot Drop Box will be located in the Gazebo across from the South Orange Fire Station and Seton Hall University. Anyone Can Vote By Mail!

To get a Vote by Mail Application, you may download it HERE, or pick one up in person from the Village Clerk's Office. Completed applications should be mailed directly to the Essex County Clerk's Office.

Once Vote by Mail ballots are completed, they may be placed in in the Essex County Vote by Mail Drop Box right under the Gazebo at 56 Sloan Street. There are two free designated voter parking spaces, or mailed to the mail to the Essex County Clerk. If you choose to use the Drop Box, Vote By Mail Ballots are regularly picked up Essex County officials. Most importantly the Drop Box is under video surveillance.

*** Secondary ballot box is now located at Seton Hall University, Bethany Hall. 


Important Dates for The Upcoming Municipal Election:

  • April 18, 2023- Late Night Voter Registration

Deadline to Register to Vote for the Municipal Election. Download New Jersey Voter Registration Application or Register to Vote online by clicking HERE. The Village Clerk’s Office will be holding a Late Night Voter Registration Drive Event for the Municipal Election on April 18, 2023; 4:30pm-9:00pm. If any residents need to newly register or make any changes to their registration, please visit our office!

  • May 2, 2023- Last Day To Apply for Mail-in-Ballots

Deadline to apply for a Vote-by-Mail for General Election by mail. All applications will be sent to The Essex County Clerk's Office located at 465 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark, NJ 07102. 

  • May 8, 2023- Last Day to File Mail-in-Ballot application by 3:00pm, IN PERSON IN THE OFFICE OF THE COUNTY CLERK. 
  • May 9, 2023- ELECTION DAY
