Nowadays, it’s especially exciting to have a good book to read. For Black History Month, Ahadi and Janine – lovers of diverse children’s books – decided to share some answers to one of their favorite questions: “Can you recommend a book with a black character or about a black leader?” Their answer is always, “Yes!”
Ahadi and Janine hope that you will find a new title that interests you and your family. Each week they will add a new list with a different theme. You can check out many of these books from our SOMa libraries by going inside or using a curbside pickup. Please wear your masks and enjoy!
- Dr. Ahadi Bugg-Levine loved visiting SOMa’s libraries when growing up here. Ahadi stayed in the libraries for hours at a time and later worked in a library during college. Now, she loves researching new book titles for her young daughter because representation matters!
- Ms. Janine Guida-Poutre has worked extensively for libraries in the South Orange-Maplewood School District. Janine is the Library Media Specialist for Seth Boyden Elementary School. She has a passion for children’s books, especially books reflecting the diversity of her students.
