HIGH SCHOOL-ADULTS CLASSES Portfolio Development: Grade 7-Adult This class is an opportunity to develop portfolios for both college applications and/or for Advanced Placement Studio Art students. This is a hands-on art-making class with significant individualized instruction along with group projects. Possible areas of activity will be 2-D design, drawing and painting. Students will normally work in their own medium on their own ideas that they develop through critiques and guidance. Students will develop a systematic way to critique artwork through group discussions. This 10-week session will be oriented toward developing a breadth of problem solving, media and subject matter. Painting: Grade 7-Adult This class is a solid introduction to color and composition with paints. Students will learn how to handle watercolor as well as acrylic paints on both paper and canvas including stretching and gessoing preparation. They will explore a variety of painting techniques while discovering their own direction. Some drawing and monprinting techniques, a natural extension for painting, will also be explored to enhance the painting experience. Students will be introduced to historic painters and the vocabulary necessary to assess their own artwork. The class is appropriate for all levels.Instructor: Larry McKim. Thursdays, 4:00-6:00. Fee: $210. Material Fee: $40. Click here to register Silk Screen Printmaking: Grade 7-Adult This class will be an introduction to the process of silk screening. This technique became popular in the 1960's in the Pop Art movement. Since then it has developed into a mainstream printmaking technique used for both fine artwork and for printing on fabric such as t-shirts. The process is based on the use of stencils attached to a screen mesh and will explore a number of ways of creating stencils, including hand-drawn, found objects and computer-generated. Jewelry-Intro to PMC Be your own jeweler designing and creating beads, pendants, earings, small sculptures...you'll be amazed at how easy it is to produce professional-looking silver pieces. In this class, you'll explore the fantastic medium of PMC (precious metal clay). This user-friendly product is a malleable substance composed of fine silver particles in an organic binder that can be sculpted and manipulated like potters clay. After firing in a kiln, the binder is burned off and your unique design is left in pure silver. All levels are welcome. Instructor, Terry Kovalcik, is a Senior Certified Instructor for the Rio Rewards Program and has won awards for his own jewelry work. Art with a Master Master Artist, Philip Sherrod supports students through development and technique. In this very unique class, students of all levels, in all mediums, benefit from individual attention and critiques which is the key to its success and popularity. Professional and non-professional artists work side-by-side at their own level, at their own pace, developing high level skills and vision. A long time professional artist and teacher with extensive exhibitions, Sherrod also teaches at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Design of Fine Arts in NYC. Drawing Plus 2/3: Grades 9-12 In this exemplary class , High School students with some drawing experience learn the basics and explore fundamentals of line, form, composition and perspective. Learning to really 'push' the materials, they use graphite, color pencils and paint to develop individual skills while enhancing and improving eye-hand coordination, necessary in drawing. Dancer/Instructor Toni Messina leads participants through traditional and improvisational techniques emphasizing feet, plus arm and hand movements to live guitar music. No experience is required, the class is offered for both men and women. Program includes an end-of-year fiesta. Fee: $115.
Middle Eastern Dance From the sands of the Sahara to the clubs of NYC, the timeless rhythms of bellydance are vibrant as ever. Participants will learn technique in isolations, movement and steps to a musical background of the unique melodies of Middle Eastern music. Emphasis will be on stance, hips, arms, and torso. Musical Theater Workshop: Ages 8-13 The Baird again hosts the musical theater-in-residence, Flying Ship Productions, an active professional touring troupe. Flying Ship offers classes in musical theater to participants ages 8 to 13. Students work and develop in all facets of musical theater including acting, singing, jazz, and improvisational skills leading to an original production in May. Classes start in Sept/Oct. with limited enrollment. Classes are held on Mondays, 4 to 6 p.m. at CLASSES FOR PRESCHOOL TO GRADE 5 Comic Book Capers: Grades 1-3 Calling all comic book lovers! Its most important for children ages 2 to 3 years to simply learn through sensory driven projects. They will 'work' with pudding, rice....who knows what? to touch and discover and 'create' with objects around them. In this popular class, participants will make animals, aliens, masks and more, while learning hand-building and glazing techniques and having loads of fun! Ceramics and Glass Workshop: Grades K-4 Offering a great opportunity to experience two unique areas in one classroom, students first explore clay: Forms can be combined to create vases, bowls, sculpture, etc. You can form clay coils or press balls into a mold, weave into a basket or add embellishments to create masks and other designs. They then move onto glass: students learn the foundation of glass fusing while exploring different techniques to create fun, colorful fused glass items. Mosaics for Children: Grades K-4 Among other projects, students design and create their owm 8” x 10” wooden tray with an arrangement of mosaics and hand painted tile. Ballet: Ages 2-7 For the budding ballerina, this is a perfect introduction to the discipline with age appropriate methods. Age appropriate classes introduce children to fundamentals including positions, steps, vocabulary, floor work and creative movement and a combination of technique, barre exercises, floor work, and more will be reviewed.
