Q. Can I park at a meter with my Business/Employee permit?
A. No. Permits are not valid at meters.

Q. How can I get a commuter permit?
A. Currently there are long waiting lists for any commuter permit. You are eligible to place your name on any of the waiting lists as long as you qualify. The waiting time is approximately five (5) years. When your name comes off the list, you are sent a letter notifying you that you can receive a permit.

Q. How do I qualify for a commuter permit?
A. Non-residents are eligible to get on the waiting lists for New Jersey Transit and Mountain Station. Residents can get on those lists plus a Resident only list.

Q. Can I park on the street overnight?
A. No. Overnight parking is not allowed town wide, on the street or in the parking lots between 2:00am and 6:00am, without permission or a valid permit.

Q. Who is eligible for on street, day and night parking in front of their residence?
A. One or two family residences that have NO DRIVEWAY.

Q. How do I get on the waiting list?
A. Go to the Village’s website, southorange.org. Follow the menu bar to the far right and click on Forms. Look for the Parking Authority heading and follow that down to the Waiting List forms.

Q. How long is the wait?
A. Approximately five (5) years.

Q. How do I periodically check my position status?
A. Call the office, 973, 378-7715 x2037 or email nrodriguez@southorange.org.

Q. How will I know when I’m eligible for a permit?
A. The office will mail you a letter of eligibility, giving you ten business days to respond that you are still interested.

Q. What should I do if I move?

Q. What is “meter feeding”? A. Meter feeding is paying for “additional” time on a meter over what is allowed. For example; you park at a meter that is one (1) hour only for 25¢ per hour. At the end of your hour you put another 25¢ in to buy an additional hour worth of time; that is “meter feeding”. Q. How do you know I am “meter feeding”?
A. The enforcement officers do electronic time surveys, chalking and visual observations.

Q. Can I get a ticket for “meter feeding”?
A. Yes, meter feeding is a $39 ticket.

Q. How much time do the meters give you on Sloan St.?
A. 30 Minutes Only. These are designed as short term parking meters.

Q. How much does the Sloan St. meter cost?
A. 25¢ for 30 minutes.

Q. If I put two (2) quarters in the meters on Sloan St, will I get an hour of parking?
A. No you will only get 30 minutes.

Q. What are the 12 hour meters for?
A. For people who need to park for any number of hours up to 12.

Q. What if the meter is broken?
A. If a meter is broken and unable to accept money, you may still park at it but only for the amount of time it allows.

Q. How does the Pay by Space machine work?
A. Enter your space number first then deposit your payment.

Q. Does the Pay by Space machine give change?
A. No. The machine is labeled and states that no change is given.

Q. Do I have to display my receipt on my dashboard?
A. No. Just hang on to it as your proof of purchase.

Q. Can I use the Pay by Space machine parking lot and then go to the city?
A. No, the Sloan Street lot is not for commuter parking. You should use the NJ Transit lot or Rescue Squad lot after 1pm Mon-Fri, its free.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. Pay as you go - $1.00 each way (exact amount, drivers do not make change) $10.00 Ten Trip Ticket Booklet available from the driver or in the parking office Annual pass for $150.00 only available in the parking office.

Q. What neighborhoods do you go to?
A. Tuxedo Park, Montrose, Newstead, North Wyoming, Irvington, Prospect, Academy & Valley Street

Q. I have out of town guests coming to visit, where can they park day and night?
A. Short term visits may be accommodated by a courtesy placement on our, “Do Not Ticket” log allowing your visitor to park in one of our municipal lots

Q. Who is eligible for on street, day and night parking in front of their residence?
A. One or two family residences that have NO DRIVEWAY.

Q. Is over night parking in South Orange allowed?
A. No overnight on-street parking between 2am and 6am is allowed in South Orange unless you have a permit or permission from SOPA or the SOPD.

Q. If I live on campus can I get a parking permit from the Parking Authority?
A. You can only get a South Orange Avenue Zone permit. It is for students and staff of the University for parking right on South Orange Avenue near the main gate between the signs that designate that zone. It’s only valid Mon-Sat 8am – 8pm. It’s not valid anywhere else in town.

Q. If I rent a house or apartment in South Orange am I eligible for the South Orange Avenue zone permit?
A. Yes.

Q. If I rent an apartment in a one family or multi-family house in South Orange and there is not enough room on the driveway for me to park, can I get a permit for the street in front of the house?
A. No, since you have a driveway you are not eligible for a street permit but you are eligible for a day and/or night permit for the nearest municipal lot.

Q. If I rent an apartment in an apartment building in South Orange and there is no parking at all, can I get a street permit in front of the building?
A. No, but you are eligible for a day and/or night permit for the nearest municipal lot.

Q. How do I pay for a parking ticket in South Orange?
A. You can pay for your ticket in the following ways:

Q. Can the Parking Authority dismiss a ticket?
A. No, only the Municipal Court Judge can dismiss a ticket.

Q. Do I have to pay for handicap parking?
A. Yes, if there is a meter or pay station. Handicap parking was created for accessibility not to be free.

Q. Do I have to pay more than the first dime or quarter?
A. No.

Q. Can I park longer than the stated time?
A. Yes.
