Progress is happening on postal service in South Orange

In recognition of customer service and deliveries being below expectation, the USPS is looking to improve service to residents and businesses

On November 27, 2018, Rep. Donald Payne, Jr., Freeholder Janine G. Bauer and Trustee Deborah Davis-Ford met with Acting Postmaster Kiari Allen of the South Orange Post Office, operations manager Mark Hernandez and Robert Schultz, customer relations, for an in-depth session on ways to improve service to residents and businesses, at the front desk, in mail delivery and all other services, from stamps and packages to mass mailings and landscaping/general appearance of the Post Office at 31 Vose Ave. The initiative was led by Freeholder Bauer and Trustee Davis-Ford; they discussed complaints ranging from slow mail, missed deliveries, lost packages and more. The Post Office has added a second supervisor and is concentrating on staff training at the window, and they learned that there are new tools for identifying, sorting and distributing mail, a “take extra care” alert where there is a chronic problem, and “informed delivery” service alerts which you can sign up for to get an email alert for incoming deliveries. The local number is (973) 762-2872, there is a toll-free phone number for problems and other tools on the USPS website. USPS has released the following letter to address the concerns of customers of the South Orange Post Office.

Dear South Orange NJ Postal Customers:

Your Postal Service is working hard to provide the best possible mail services in South Orange. Recent customer service and delivery anomalies do not reflect the level of service we wish to provide. We apologize if we have not met your service expectations.

As always, to help us serve you better, South Orange residents are encouraged to share their thoughts by contacting us at:

• The Postal Service’s Northern New Jersey District Consumer & Industry Contact Office at 732-819-3260;

• The Postal Service’s toll free Customer Care Center at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777); or;

• Send us an email by visiting our website and clicking on “Contact Us” at the bottom of our homepage.

Every call and email will be carefully documented and appropriate action taken to strengthen service.

Check mail outside the box! Sign up for Informed Delivery® to see what mail is coming before it arrives.

We also recommend Informed Delivery, a new free feature from Postal Service. Informed Delivery sends an email notification to customers containing black and white images of the outside of letter-sized mail pieces that are processed by our automated equipment before delivery. Informed Delivery enables users to see what letter mail is being delivered wherever, whenever — even as they travel — on a computer or on their mobile devices. This added level of monitoring your mail, we believe, will help you assess your incoming mail and identify any processing-based service issues as early as possible.

Who is able to use Informed Delivery® and are there limitations on participation?

You must live in an eligible ZIP Code™ location and be able to verify your identity in order to sign up for Informed Delivery. In rare instances, you may live in an eligible ZIP Code, but cannot sign up for the feature because your individual mailbox is not uniquely coded; this coding determines which images are provided to each Informed Delivery user and ensures that users view mail destined for their address only. While most addresses are uniquely coded, not all are, especially in high density areas (e.g., apartment buildings or condos). If your address is not uniquely coded, you will not be able to sign up for Informed Delivery at this time; please check back at a later date. USPS is working to increase the number of addresses with access to Informed Delivery.
